Drum Terms
Paradiddle - This is a sticking pattern which goes R L R R or L R L L It can be useful for playing certain patterns quickly and easily. In addition, a lot of beats can be played by applying this pattern to the snare, hi hat and bass drum.
Accent - An accent is a note that is played louder than other notes. This can make patterns on one drum sound unique. If accents are applied to the drum set then very cool patterns can result.
Double Bass - Some drums have either two drums of a double pedal for one drum. In either case, different sounds can be made from each different strike of the double pedal. Double pedal music is especially prevalent in rock drumming but not so much in jazz. Anyhow, it is a useful skill for all drum players.
Triplet - A triplet is usually a group of 3 notes played on one beat. The triplet is especially important in jazz. Of course, sometimes many triplets are played on one beat rather than just one. The triplet rhythm can also be interpreted as being 6 / 8 time.
Bass Drum Comping - Sometimes in jazz, rhythm patterns can be played on the bass drum alone in conjunction with the ride. This idea is a major skill in jazz playing. However, this form of playing did not become popular until the rise of the Be Bop movement of jazz.
6/8 time - Notes are counted as 6 beats per measure in 6/8 time. Of course, 6/8 beats can also be interpreted as triplets in 4/4 time.
